Solar energy for all: Australia launches a tariff with free electricity

The Solar Sharer tariff will be available for users with smart meters in regions such as New South Wales, southeastern Queensland, and South Australia, with plans for nationwide rollout by 2027. The program will allow all consumers, even those without solar panels, to benefit from free electricity during periods of surplus, which should help stabilize the grid and reduce loads during peak hours.

The SSO idea is based on an initiative by AGL known as "Three for Free," which was launched in South Australia in July 2025. This program provided households with the opportunity to receive three hours of free electricity from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, allowing those who cannot install solar panels or batteries to significantly save on their electricity bills.
The new system addresses two main issues: the surplus of solar energy during the day when wholesale electricity prices drop or become negative, and the limited opportunities for consumers to take advantage of solar energy.

Shifting consumption to daytime not only reduces the load on the grid in the evening but also helps all users lower their electricity bills. "Running a washing machine or air conditioner in the middle of the day will allow the use of available and cheap electricity, as well as cool the space by evening when electricity prices are higher. This behavioral change is more efficient and economical compared to building new power lines," noted Solar Citizens CEO Heidi Lee Douglas.

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen stated that the SSO will create opportunities for free electricity for both solar panel owners and renters, making solar energy accessible even for residents of apartment buildings.

The Australian Energy Council (AEC) approved the new initiative but expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of prior consultations before its launch. AEC CEO Louise Kinnaird warned that this could undermine trust in the industry and lead to unpredictable consequences, despite the potential benefits for consumers.
