One of these traditions is "öpkö chabuu", shared by resident Shaibubu Anyrakaeva from the Bakai-Ata district:
“This tradition is also known as ‘öpkö kaguu’. It is performed not only during weddings but also for people who have returned from long trips, recovered from serious illnesses, or returned from the army. When a ‘kelinka’ enters the house, relatives seat the newlyweds in front of them and hit them with goat lungs (Kyrgyz: “echkinin öpkösü”). This is done with wishes that all bad things go away, and that the young couple strengthens, so they have children and everyone remains healthy. Therefore, in Talas, goat lungs are not consumed as food.”
Local resident Tilek Erkaliev spoke about other customs prevalent in the Bakai-Ata, Manas, and Kara-Buura districts of the Talas region.
According to him, people say: “Tamakty tatduu kylgan tuz, alystyi jakyn kylgan kyz” (“Salt gives flavor to food, and girls bring people from different corners closer together”). In the seven regions of Kyrgyzstan, there are different traditions related to the acceptance of a new daughter-in-law into the family. For example, in Talas, one can encounter rituals such as “terdetmey,” “mücho saluu,” and “chykhtanga kirgizuu,” noted T. Erkaliev.
“Chykhtanga kirgizuu” is a tradition in which the elders of the matchmakers are invited into a room where the meat from the slaughtered livestock is laid out. They are treated to meat and tail fat, and they have the right to choose the pieces of meat they like.
