The Mandatory Health Insurance Fund (MHIF) reminded how medical assistance is provided to children under 6 years old in case of their hospitalization in a hospital.

Children in this age group are considered privileged patients and have the right to free inpatient treatment, in accordance with the State Guarantees Program.

Among the medical services provided without co-payment during the hospitalization of a child under 6 years old, the following can be highlighted:

Treatment and monitoring: examinations, consultations with specialized doctors, and a full course of therapy corresponding to the diagnosis.

Diagnostics: all necessary standard laboratory tests (including blood and urine tests, biochemical tests, etc.) and instrumental diagnostic methods (X-ray, ultrasound, etc.).

Medications: provision of all necessary medications for treatment that are included in the list of essential drugs.

Care and nutrition: nursing care, conducting procedures, and organizing meals throughout the entire duration of the hospital stay.

Conditions for hospitalization to maintain free treatment

Referral for planned hospitalization: the child must have a referral from a family doctor or a specialist. It is important to note that if a child is admitted to the hospital without a referral, even with privileged status, all services will be charged according to the price list.

Emergency hospitalization: in cases that threaten life and require urgent intervention, hospitalization is carried out through emergency services, and a referral is not required in this case!

Exception: payment for expensive studies

Please note that the co-payment exemption does not apply to expensive procedures and studies (for example, certain types of high-tech diagnostics and complex manipulations), even for children under 6 years old. The cost of such services will be determined according to the price list at the medical institution's cash desk, regardless of privileged status. The hospital is obliged to inform parents in advance about the necessity and cost of such studies.

If you have any questions or encounter unlawful payment demands, you can contact the 24-hour hotline 113 of the MHIF.

The MHIF reminds that if your child under 6 years old requires inpatient treatment, it should be provided completely free of charge in accordance with the conditions mentioned above.
