At the beginning of 2026, 22 new cases of measles were reported in Kyrgyzstan, as announced by Gulzada Dadanova, a doctor at the Republican Center for Immunoprophylaxis, on the air of Radio "Birinchi."

According to the specialist, there was a noticeable decline in the disease by the end of 2025: only 1 case was registered in October, 2 in November, and 7 in December. However, in January of this year, the number of cases sharply increased to 22.

Dadanova noted that 92% of those infected were either unvaccinated or did not receive their vaccination on time. The remaining 8% were vaccinated, among whom 6% had only received the first dose. The immunity developed after the first vaccination at the age of one year protects 90%, but to achieve 95-98% protection, a second dose must be administered at two years. 2% of those infected who received one dose were unable to develop sufficient immunity.

In 2025, 90% of children in Kyrgyzstan were vaccinated against measles, rubella, and mumps. To stop the spread of measles, vaccination coverage must reach 95%, the doctor added. Over the past three years, since 2023, more than 1 million children aged 9 months to 7 years have been vaccinated, but some parents still refuse vaccinations. The measles virus is highly contagious—one infected person can transmit it to 10-15 others, especially among the unvaccinated.

Dadanova also emphasized that adults can contract measles as well. In 2025, among those infected, 4% were aged 20-30 years, and 5% were over 30. If an adult is unsure whether they have been vaccinated, they should get vaccinated, as it will not cause harm. If they have already been vaccinated, their immunity will only be strengthened, and if not, new immunity will be developed.

The symptoms of measles initially resemble those of the flu: fever, cough, sneezing, and weakness. On the fourth day, a rash appears, starting on the face and neck and then spreading across the body. Without adequate treatment, measles can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, meningitis, otitis, diarrhea, and even death. There is no specific medication for measles; treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms, reducing fever, and strengthening the body with vitamins.

"Some parents refuse vaccination, claiming that they are responsible for their child's health in case of illness. However, they forget that a sick child can infect others, including infants and those who cannot receive the vaccine. This can lead to serious complications. We must follow vaccination programs to protect society," Dadanova concluded.
