According to CNN, the reason for the mass protests was the killing of 37-year-old Rene Good in Minneapolis on January 7. On that day, an ICE officer shot the woman, who was unarmed. The next incident occurred the following day in Portland, where a border agent opened fire on a vehicle, injuring two people.

Protests in Minneapolis began immediately after news of Rene Good's death. On January 10, according to CNN, tens of thousands of people took to the streets. Demonstrations also took place in New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Washington, Austin, Boston, and other major American cities.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen characterized the actions of the ICE officer as justified. In response, Illinois Representative Robin Kelly announced her intention to initiate impeachment proceedings against the secretary and file several lawsuits against her.

President Donald Trump claims that Rene Good was shot after she "intentionally and cruelly" ran over an immigration officer. However, there is currently no official confirmation of this version. A surveillance video released by the Department of Justice indicates that the ICE officer opened fire when the woman was attempting to leave the scene of the incident.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey sharply condemned the actions of the immigration service, urging ICE to "get the hell out."

“ICE officers are trying to pass this off as an act of self-defense. After watching the video, I can say that this is complete nonsense,” he noted in a conversation with reporters.
