The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic has reported on mass protests taking place in several cities in Iran. As of January 6, 2026, according to official Iranian sources, there are no Kyrgyz citizens among the injured.

In light of the current events, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic strongly recommends that Kyrgyz citizens temporarily refrain from traveling to Iran unless such trips are urgent.

Citizens who are already in Iran should exercise caution, avoiding places with large gatherings of people and protests, and strictly adhere to the instructions of local authorities. It is advisable to carry identification and contact details of the Kyrgyz embassy, as well as to stay updated on current news.

According to the human rights organization HRANA, at least 36 people have died during the protests in Iran over the past ten days. Of these, 34 were protesters, and two were security personnel. However, Iranian authorities have only confirmed the deaths of three law enforcement officers, as reported by BBC journalists on January 7.

HRANA also reported more than 60 injured and 2,076 detained protesters. BBC Persian has so far confirmed the deaths of 20 people.

The protests in Iran began in late 2025 against the backdrop of economic difficulties, as entrepreneurs started expressing dissatisfaction over the decline in the national currency's value. In 2025, the Iranian rial lost nearly 50% of its value against the dollar, and inflation in December reached 42.5%. Since December 30, the protests have also involved students, spreading to other cities.

According to global media, the current protests are the most significant since 2022, when unrest occurred following the death of Mahsa Amini. According to the Associated Press, as of January 1, 2026, at least seven people have died in four Iranian cities, and protests have spread to dozens of settlements.

U.S. President Donald Trump has also expressed his opinion on the situation, stating on the social network Truth Social his readiness to support peaceful protesters in the event of violent actions by the Iranian authorities.
