Due to the sharp deterioration of the security situation and the outbreak of mass protests, France has decided to evacuate part of its diplomatic personnel from Iran. This was reported by AFP, citing sources.
French diplomats left the country on January 11 and 12. Although the exact number of evacuees is not disclosed, there are usually about 30 people working at the embassy in Tehran.
In response to the agency's request, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that changes had been made to the mission's operations to enable it to effectively perform its functions under the new conditions. It was emphasized that the embassy continues its activities.
“The ambassador and key staff remain in the country to support French citizens in Iran,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.
The United States has also urged its citizens to leave Iran immediately amid the protests. Details are posted on the website of the virtual U.S. embassy in Tehran link. Americans were advised to expect disruptions in internet connectivity, consider alternative means of communication, and, if safe, to consider traveling overland to Armenia or Turkey. “Create an evacuation plan, regardless of U.S. government assistance,” the message states.
If leaving is not possible, U.S. citizens are advised to stay in a safe place, avoid large gatherings, and stock up on essential food and medications.
Sweden, in turn, has updated its travel recommendations, urging all its citizens to leave Iran immediately due to the sharp deterioration of the security situation link.
