In the coming weeks, TikTok will activate a new age verification system for users in European Union countries. This decision comes in response to growing demands for restricting access to the platform for individuals under 16 years old, as reported by the Kazinform agency.
The new system, which has been tested over the past year, analyzes profile data, uploaded videos, and behavioral signals to determine whether an account may belong to a user under 13 years old.
According to The Guardian, accounts flagged as problematic will not be blocked but will be reviewed by moderators. It is important to note that a similar project in the UK resulted in the removal of thousands of accounts.
Representatives of TikTok stated that the new technology is developed in accordance with EU legislation requirements. During the creation of the system, the company collaborated with the Irish Data Protection Commission, which is the main privacy regulator in the European Union.
The European Parliament continues to insist on the introduction of age restrictions for social media users, while Denmark advocates for a complete ban on access to social networks for individuals under 15 years old.
At the end of November, the European Parliament adopted a resolution that prohibits the use of social media for children under 16 years old.
