In its statement, the U.S. Embassy in Iran noted that citizens with American passports may be detained. The diplomats also warned of possible disruptions to internet service and flight cancellations.
The publication contains recommendations: “If you cannot leave the premises, find a safe place in your home or another secure building. Ensure you have supplies of food, water, medications, and other essential items. Try to avoid large gatherings, remain inconspicuous, and be attentive to your surroundings.” Alternative routes for departure include land routes through Armenia or Turkey.
In early January, the United States deployed a naval carrier group to the Middle East, which includes the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln and several destroyers. U.S.-Iranian negotiations are scheduled for February 6; however, they were threatened with disruption on the evening of February 4, when Iran tightened its demands regarding the format of the meetings, narrowing the agenda and calling for negotiations to be held in Oman instead of Istanbul. Nevertheless, preparations for the meeting have resumed.
