This was reported by Stefan Paul, head of the international logistics company Kühne+Nagel, in an interview with European media.
According to him, the conflict with Iran has already had a significant impact on global logistics chains. As a result of the war, about 18% of air freight had to exit the global logistics system. There are also disruptions in maritime transport.
Paul emphasized that the countries in the Persian Gulf region are experiencing the consequences of the logistics crisis much more severely than Europe, due to their high dependence on imports, especially in the food sector.
The greatest threat is to the supply of fresh vegetables and fruits, as many countries in this region rely almost entirely on the import of such goods.
Although it is theoretically possible to organize some freight transport overland from Saudi Arabia, the existing transport capacities cannot compensate for the volumes of maritime transport. According to the expert, a single container ship can carry up to 20,000 containers, and replacing such a volume with ground transport is unlikely to be feasible.
