
According to the results of an exit poll conducted by the Eurasian Integration Institute, 86.7% of participants expressed support for the new version of the constitution. The survey covered about 30,000 people at the exit of 200 polling stations located in 17 regions and three major cities of Kazakhstan.
Other data obtained from the private fund "Institute of Comprehensive Social Research - Astana 'Socis-A'" showed a support level of 87.4%. A study by the Public Policy Institute of the "Amanat" party indicated that 88.6% of respondents approve of the changes to the fundamental law.
The Central Election Commission preliminarily reported that the voter turnout in the referendum was 73.24%, and the total number of citizens who voted reached 9,126,850. During the day, the CEC confirmed that the referendum took place.
The highest turnout was recorded in the Kyzylorda region — 93.04%, while in Almaty it was only 33.43%. In the capital, Astana, the turnout was 60.36%.
The development of the draft of the new constitution was initiated by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The fundamental law includes significant institutional changes, such as the abolition of the bicameral parliament and the creation of a unicameral legislative body known as the Kurultai.
Additionally, it is proposed to grant the president the right to unilaterally appoint the Attorney General, the chairpersons of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts, the head of the National Bank, and the head of the National Security Committee. A new position of vice president is also introduced, whose candidacy will be approved by parliament upon the president's proposal.
The Central Election Commission is expected to publish the official results of the referendum within seven days.
