The company UNE, which manages the power grid in Cuba, reported that an investigation into the causes of the power outage is currently underway.
The country's energy system is severely outdated and has failed multiple times before. In addition, a shortage of fuel for power plants has exacerbated the situation.
Since the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro by U.S. authorities in early January, oil supplies to Cuba have effectively ceased. This has led to frequent multi-hour power outages in various regions of the country. In early March, a complete blackout occurred due to an accident at the main power plant, affecting two-thirds of the island's territory.
It is worth noting that a complete blackout in Cuba also occurred in the fall of 2024, when there were two outages in less than a day.
