A fire broke out at the Runneburg Castle, as reported by the newspaper Bild. The incident occurred on March 26 at around 11:00 PM local time, when flames erupted in a corner building near a tall watchtower.

Several fire crews were dispatched to the scene. The wind and flying sparks created the impression that the flames could spread to other parts of the castle.

However, firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire and protect almost all historical elements of the complex.

According to preliminary reports, no one was injured as a result of the incident. Local authorities will soon begin an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage.

Note Runneburg Castle was founded in 1168, and its first mention appears in a charter by Ludwig III, dated 1174. This structure is considered one of the main Romanesque architectural landmarks of Thuringia, and its significance as a historical monument was recognized around the year 1900. Due to the good preservation of several medieval elements, Runneburg Castle has become a popular tourist destination in the region.
