An important decision was made by the Italian parliament, which unanimously voted to add a new provision regarding femicide— the murder of women for gender-related reasons— to the Criminal Code. Life imprisonment is now prescribed for this crime, as reported by BBC News.

It is noteworthy that the law was adopted on a day dedicated to the international fight against violence against women.

Italy has now become the fourth country within the European Union to introduce a criminal definition of femicide, joining Cyprus, Malta, and Croatia.

According to statistics from the Italian police, out of 116 cases of women murdered last year, 106 were related to gender-based hatred.
