WB: In the next 15 years, 170 thousand Kyrgyz citizens may fall below the poverty line

The data concerns residents of rural areas

According to a report by the World Bank, in the next 15 years, 170 thousand citizens of Kyrgyzstan may find themselves below the poverty line. This warning is related to the impact of climate change on the rural regions of the country.

Forecasts indicate that climate change will not be the primary cause of the increase in the number of poor people in the country. It is expected that by 2030-2040, the share of people living in poverty will only increase by 1.8-2.2%. However, there remains a high risk in rural areas due to natural disasters that may be exacerbated by climate change. By around 2040, approximately 170 thousand Kyrgyz citizens may face poverty for this reason.

The most significant natural risks include landslides and floods.
