The Iranian capital may be relocated due to the depletion of water resources
As shown by the research of Sobira Kurbanova and Eldaniza Guseynova, Bishkek, along with other capitals of Central Asia, may find itself in a water crisis situation similar to that of Tehran. Although the city has not yet faced problems akin to those observed in Iran, its situation is rapidly approaching a crisis.
The main factors contributing to a potential water crisis in Bishkek, Tashkent, Almaty, Astana, and Dushanbe include glacier melting, aging infrastructure, a rapidly growing population, and irrational use of water resources.
The groundwater level continues to decline, soils are becoming saline, and ecosystems are degrading. Researchers recommend analyzing the weaknesses in water supply and irrigation systems for agricultural lands now, taking climate change into account, and implementing necessary reforms. Otherwise, problems may not only worsen within countries but also lead to international conflicts.
Tehran is experiencing critical depletion of both groundwater and surface water resources, prompting authorities to even consider options for evacuating the population.
