The Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic has decided to extend the New Year holidays of 2026 until January 12.
Previously, the Ministry of Labor proposed to move the working days of January 8 and 9, 2026, to other dates — February 7 and April 25.
The Ministry explained that this project is aimed at more effective use of holiday and weekend days for workers, as well as creating optimal social and economic conditions at the beginning of the new year.
The extension of the holidays has several goals, according to information from the agency:
— reducing the number of seasonal illnesses, which typically increase in early January;
— allowing parents and children to spend time together, as the winter holidays for schoolchildren in 2026 also end on January 12;
— stimulating domestic tourism and supporting small and medium-sized businesses during the winter peak season;
— reducing the load on the energy system and utilities in conditions of electricity shortages in winter.
