Karim Massimov, the former head of the National Security Committee, was detained in January 2022 on suspicion of treason. In April 2023, the court sentenced him to 18 years in prison with confiscation of property. Subsequently, another criminal case was initiated against him related to money laundering and receiving a particularly large bribe.

During a search of Massimov's mansion in Astana, extensive collections of weapons, antiques, expensive watches, paintings, gold bars, and significant amounts of cash were found. The house itself, with an area of almost 2,900 square meters, contained a swimming pool, sauna, disco bar, karaoke, and even its own stage. The residence also contained millions of dollars in cash and 11 business-class cars. The estimated value of the mansion itself, along with the land, exceeded 1.5 billion tenge.
