Women of Kyrgyzstan in numbers: more than half of the population live longer than men
Every year on March 8, International Women's Day is celebrated in various countries around the world, officially recognized by the UN in 1975. This day has become a symbol of the struggle for women's rights and equality.

According to information from the National Statistical Committee, by the beginning of 2026, the population of Kyrgyzstan reached 7.4 million people, with women making up more than 50% of the total. The average age of women in the country is 30 years, while for men it is 28 years.

According to data for 2024, women in Kyrgyzstan live on average longer than men—77 years compared to 68 years for men.

The main reason for this gap is the significantly higher mortality rate among men, which is 1.6 times greater than that of women.

The age structure of the population also influences marriage trends. In 2024, more than 45,000 women got married, of which 87% were doing so for the first time. The majority of such marriages occur in the age group of 18-29 years, accounting for nearly 87% of the total number of brides.

The average age at which women enter their first marriage is 24 years, while for a second marriage it is 35 years.

On average, each woman in Kyrgyzstan has about three children. Despite a decrease in the number of newborns—from 158,000 in 2020 to 140,000 in 2024—the birth rate still exceeds the level necessary for simple population reproduction, contributing to the growth of the citizenry.

Women also play an important role in the country's economy. In 2024, the employment rate of women of working age was 48.7%, and the average age of working women was 41 years. The largest number of women are employed in the fields of education, healthcare, social services, hospitality, and trade.

However, the gender pay gap remains a relevant issue. According to a 2025 study, women's salaries are only 65.7% of men's wages, which is related to the characteristics of employment in various sectors.

In the field of education, women constitute the majority: at the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year, about 87% of school teachers are women.

Among students, there is also a predominance of girls: in 2024, their share in vocational education was over 58%, while among university students it was about 55%.

Women dedicate a significant amount of time to household chores, spending an average of 4 hours and 40 minutes a day, which accounts for more than 19% of their total time. For men, this figure is more than five times lower. In rural areas, women spend about 5 hours a day on household responsibilities, while in cities, it is approximately 4 hours.

Despite their busy work and home lives, women find time for leisure, spending an average of about 2 hours and 20 minutes a week on active forms of recreation.
