Muslims around the world eagerly await Qadr Night — the Night of Decree, which occurs during the month of Ramadan.
Abibilla Azhy Kadyrberdiev, a representative of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kyrgyzstan, spoke about the traditions and features of this sacred night.
Spiritual Value
Qadr Night is mentioned in the Quran. In Surah "Al-Qadr," it is stated that this night is "better than a thousand months." According to Islamic teaching, it is on this night that the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
The expression "better than a thousand months" implies that sincere worship performed on this night brings greater rewards than prayers recited over a long period.
When is Qadr Night celebrated?
The specific date of Qadr Night is usually unknown until the beginning of Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad advised seeking this night among the last ten nights of the holy month, especially on odd-numbered nights. Believers pay attention to these nights, dedicating them to prayers and repentance.
Traditionally, many Muslims intensify their prayers on the night of the 26th to the 27th day of the Ramadan calendar, assuming it may coincide with the date of Qadr Night.
This year, Qadr Night is celebrated from March 16 to 17.
How to spend this sacred night?
It is recommended to spend Qadr Night in prayer, avoiding conflicts, pointless conversations, and fuss. Important actions include:
- performing additional prayers;
- reading the Quran;
- engaging in dhikr;
- turning to Allah with sincere prayers;
- reflecting on one’s life and striving for improvement.
Believers can choose where to spend this night — at home or in the mosque, but it is important not to turn it into a secular celebration.
Prohibitions on Qadr Night
According to information from the Spiritual Administration of Muslims, it is prohibited on this night to:
- cry and use foul language;
- engage in gossip;
- attend entertainment events;
- consume alcohol;
- watch entertaining videos.
Instead, it is recommended to spend time in prayer and repentance, both at home and in the mosque.
Qadr Night is a chance for every believer to seek forgiveness, cleanse their heart, and start a new phase of life with a sincere intention to do good.
