Literary scholar, translator Valery Vakulenko


Literary scholar, translator V. Vakulenko was born in the settlement named after M. V. Frunze in the Sokuluk district of the Kyrgyz SSR in a working-class family.
In 1963, he graduated from high school in his hometown, and in 1971, he graduated from the philological faculty of Leningrad State University named after A. Zhdanova.
From 1964 to 1967, he served in the ranks of the Soviet Army. He began his professional career in 1971 as an editor at the "Kyrgyzstan" publishing house,
and then worked there as a senior editor. Since 1977, he has been the head of the literature and arts department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Soviet Kyrgyzstan."
Since 1983, he has been working as a senior lecturer in the Department of Literary Theory at the Piryaly Institute in Frunze. In 1979, without interrupting his work, he completed his research titled "Problems of Humanism in Russian Soviet Literature of the 1920s" and defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Philological Sciences.
He has been publishing since 1965. The first book of the writer was a brief essay titled "The Affirmation of Socialist Humanism in
Russian Soviet Literature of the 1920s (1917—1927)."
V. Vakulenko is the author of four collections of literary-critical articles, notes, and essays. A significant part of the writer's work is devoted to translation. He has translated the works of K. Akiev, S. Sasikbaev, K. Eshmambetov, J. Mavlyanov, S. Jetimishov, Z. Sooronbaeva, Sh. Sadibakassov, and other Kyrgyz writers into Russian.
A member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1977, a member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1981.
