The minister emphasizes the risk of moisture shortage in spring
Bakyt Torobaev, the Minister of Water Resources and Agriculture, urged farmers to intensify autumn fieldwork. He noted that the preparation of land for the winter season is progressing too slowly.
In the country, there are 1 million 250 thousand hectares of arable land; however, the necessary autumn work has only been completed on a small area: autumn plowing and sowing covered approximately 62 thousand hectares, and moisture accumulation occurred on only 16 thousand hectares. On irrigated and rain-fed lands, less than 10–18% of the total area has been processed.
Torobaev warned that there may not be enough precipitation and snow in spring, which will exacerbate the water resource deficit. If sufficient moisture is not accumulated at this time, it could lead to low yields next year.
The minister strongly urged farmers to accelerate the processes of plowing, sowing, and moisture retention measures:
“Winter moisture is the spring harvest. Tomorrow may be too late.”
