Generic 'Viagra' banned and withdrawn from sale in Kazakhstan

The Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan has banned the use of a drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and ordered its withdrawal from the market, as reported by TengriHealth.

The ban concerns "Desilmax" tablets containing 100 mg of sildenafil, batch number BSE92301A, which expire in July 2026. The manufacturer of this drug is the Indian company Macleods Pharmaceuticals Limited.

For reference: Sildenafil, known under the brand name Viagra, was discovered and synthesized by Pfizer in 1989. It was initially researched as a treatment for cardiovascular diseases, but its effectiveness for erectile dysfunction was confirmed during clinical trials. In 1998, sildenafil received approval for medical use under the trade name Viagra.

The order for the ban was signed by the chairman of the committee for medical and pharmaceutical control of the Ministry of Health on February 11, 2026.

According to this order, this batch of the drug must be withdrawn from pharmacies and medical institutions.

The text of the order does not specify the reasons for making such a decision.
