In its new report, the organization proposes a number of measures for governments aimed at fuel conservation and mitigating the negative impact of rising energy resource prices.
According to Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the IEA, “the conflict in the Middle East is leading to a serious energy crisis, which includes unprecedented disruptions in global oil supply. If the situation is not resolved quickly, the consequences for energy markets and the economies of countries could be extremely severe.”
Among the ten proposals from the IEA, the following can be highlighted:
- introduction of remote work;
- reduction of the speed limit on highways by at least 10 km/h;
- encouragement of public transport use;
- restriction of car movement in major cities through license plate rotation;
- support for carpooling and car-sharing;
- optimization of commercial transport operations to enhance efficiency;
- conversion of vehicles from gas to gasoline fuel;
- exploration of alternative modes of transportation instead of air travel;
- cooking on electric stoves or other non-gas appliances;
- assistance to industrial enterprises in transitioning to other types of raw materials to save gas.
