In the Mangistau region of Kazakhstan, employees of the environmental department found 112 dead seals on the coast of the Caspian Sea, reports TASS. Monitoring of the coastline in the Tupkaragan area, from the village of Asan to Cape Bautino, led to this sad discovery.

To determine the causes of the mass death of the animals, samples of seawater were collected at the scene.

It should be noted that such cases are not uncommon. In June 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan pointed to possible causes of seal deaths in 2024, which included highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, neuroviral infection against a background of reduced immunity, and asphyxia caused by natural gas emissions from the seabed. Additionally, in 2022-2023, seals suffered from carnivore plague and acute pneumonia.
