How to Move Safely on Icy Surfaces? Recommendations

The Republican Center for Health Strengthening shared important recommendations for preventing injuries on slippery surfaces.

To reduce the risk of injury on icy ground, choose well-lit and sand-treated paths with minimal ice. Be cautious on stairs and near manholes — hold onto handrails, and in conditions of severe ice, try to place both feet on each step simultaneously.

Footwear should be stable and have good traction — preferably with a rubber or textured sole. Avoid high-heeled shoes. To enhance grip, you can use spiked attachments or temporary solutions, such as applying adhesive tape in a cross or ladder pattern on the sole.

It is recommended to take small steps and move without lifting your feet too high to avoid falls. Keep your hands free so that you can rely on them in case of a fall. Elderly people should use a cane, and pregnant women should not go outside unaccompanied — this can be dangerous for both them and their children.

When crossing the road, always use pedestrian crossings and do not rush to avoid falls. Remember that it may be difficult for drivers to brake suddenly. Also, when exiting a bus or trolleybus, hold onto the handrails, and do not try to catch up with departing transport, as this may lead to a fall.

“Walking on slippery streets while intoxicated is extremely risky, as alcohol reduces sensitivity to pain, and help may not be needed immediately. Try to stay away from buildings with hanging icicles,” the message notes.
