The correspondent of Turmush reported on the development of the healthcare system in the Issyk-Kul region and the first appearance of hospitals.

According to documents from the regional archive, the first medical professionals worked in the region from 1899 to 1905.

A military hospital was opened in Przhevalsk in 1908, accommodating 48 beds. Its staff included 1 doctor, 2 paramedics, and 1 midwife. Funding was provided by the local budget, and the hospital had 4 wards, a doctor's office, and a pharmacy.

Doctors served patients around the clock, with no days off. At that time, the region experienced cases of smallpox, typhus, malaria, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases.

According to the decree of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR dated July 2, 1925, free medical care was provided to government employees, their families, trade union members, military personnel, and disabled workers.

The resolution of the executive committee of the Kyrgyz Autonomous Region dated September 13, 1925, also guaranteed free medical assistance in all institutions in the region.

Party structures and executive bodies actively worked on expanding the network of medical institutions and improving the quality of their services.

In 1926, a hospital with 30 beds was operating in Karakol, and two doctors worked at the venereal disease dispensary.

Petr Ilyich Smorodin headed the health department, and from May 1924, he was succeeded by Ivan Alekseevich Lazhenitsyn, a graduate of Kazan University.

For many years, an important role in local medicine was played by doctor Voldemar Bekman and gynecologist Maria Yefimovna Khakhaleva, who were spouses and were awarded several state honors for their 30 years of work in healthcare.

By 1928-1929, the hospital in Karakol increased its number of beds to 60: 22 in the therapeutic department, 38 in the surgical department, and 10 in the maternity ward. In 1930, the maternity hospital was additionally equipped with 10 beds.

In 1928, a hospital was opened in Sazanovka with 15 beds, staffed by 1 doctor, 1 paramedic, and 1 midwife.

In the Tyup district, another hospital with 15 beds was established in a renovated building. Medical institutions gradually opened in Pokrovka, Koltsovka, Cholpon-Ata, Novo-Voznesenovka, and Uytal.

According to statistics, in 1927-1928, the number of patients was: 6,852 in Pokrovka, 10,328 in Koltsovka, 3,331 in Cholpon-Ata, 3,857 in Novo-Voznesenovka, and 1,437 in Uytal.

On November 21, 1939, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the Issyk-Kul region was established, which also led to the creation of the regional health department.
