Cases of Down syndrome are more frequently registered in the city of Bishkek, - Ministry of Health

On February 10, at a meeting of the committee of the Jogorku Kenesh on labor, health, women's affairs, and social issues, the First Deputy Minister of Health Aibek Matkerimov reported an increase in cases of Down syndrome in Bishkek.

The agenda of the committee included information on the implementation of the resolution of the Jogorku Kenesh concerning children with autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

The statistics on Down syndrome cases in various regions over three years are as follows:

• Bishkek: 2022 — 42 cases, 2023 — 44, 2024 — 56;

• Osh (city): 2022 — 8, 2023 — 7, 2024 — 14;

• Chui region: 2022 — 3, 2023 — 22, 2024 — 19;

• Talas region: 2022 — 4, 2023 — 8, 2024 — 5;

• Naryn region: 2022 — 5, 2023 — 6, 2024 — 5;

• Osh region: 2022 — 25, 2023 — 15, 2024 — 23;

• Jalal-Abad region: 2022 — 22, 2023 — 15, 2024 — 21;

• Batken region: 2022 — 8, 2023 — 5, 2024 — 9;

• Issyk-Kul region: 2022 — 8, 2023 — 10, 2024 — 9.

Deputy Nilufar Alimjanova asked about the beginning of more accurate disease identification. Aibek Matkerimov noted that there are key signs that parents should pay attention to in the first months of their children's lives, such as reaction to light. All necessary information leaflets are available in clinics, and family doctors help clarify the information for parents.

The deputy emphasized the importance of raising awareness, as many parents may not know the signs of Down syndrome and do not seek medical help.
