
The attack occurred during a meeting between a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and a representative of the Syrian Ministry of Internal Affairs, while a patrol was ensuring the security of discussions related to combating the terrorist group "Islamic State."
According to the WSJ, after the incident, two F-16 fighters were scrambled over Palmyra, while Syria TV added that combat aircraft were also deployed with illumination bombs.
Reports indicate that the attacker opened fire with a machine gun and was neutralized by Syrian military forces on the scene.
Sean Parnell, the Pentagon's Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, confirmed that as a result of the attack, two American servicemen and one civilian translator were killed. All of them were evacuated to a U.S. and Western coalition military base located in Al-Tanf, approximately 250 kilometers from Damascus.
