The recent state visit of the President of Mongolia to Italy completed the process of forming foreign policy partnerships with G7 countries.
Mongolia has established partnerships with several countries from the "Big Seven," including the United States (Strategic Partnership of the Third Neighbors), Japan (Special Strategic Partnership), Germany (Strategic Partnership), France (Exclusive Partnership), and Canada (Comprehensive Partnership). A cooperation plan with the United Kingdom has also been developed. As a result of the President's visit to Italy, a strategic partnership was concluded, becoming the latest in this series.
Mongolia immediately becomes a strategic partner, bypassing stages such as equal partnership or partnership based on cooperation. Currently, the country has strategic partnerships with ten states. Over the past two years, their number has increased by two: with Germany and Kazakhstan in 2024 and with Turkey and Italy in 2025.
The "Group of Twenty" or G20
G20 (The Group of Twenty) is an informal forum that includes 19 developed and developing economies, as well as the European and African unions. This group accounts for 85% of global GDP, 75% of world trade, and two-thirds of the planet's population, creating a vast space for economic and geopolitical cooperation.
It is interesting to note which G20 countries Mongolia collaborates with and which ones remain outside this circle:
Mongolia maintains a comprehensive partnership with Australia and is developing a plan to transition from cooperation with the United Kingdom to a comprehensive partnership. The country has strategic relations with Germany, India, Italy, the United States, Turkey, South Korea, and Japan, as well as comprehensive strategic partnerships with Russia and China.
In addition, Mongolia is developing comprehensive cooperation with Canada aimed at mutual prosperity and stability in the region. A partnership agreement with Europe has also been concluded.
Six countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the African Union, remain without partnership with Mongolia.
It should be noted that G7 countries established direct strategic partnerships with Italy without additional steps.
During the visit, the commitment to strengthening bilateral Mongolian-Italian relations was confirmed, with a focus on economic benefits, as well as on increasing trade and investment. This includes creating sustainable supply chains in sectors such as fashion and cashmere, as well as supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and industrial cooperation in priority areas such as agriculture, renewable energy, and technologies for energy transition. Mongolia's Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh stated: "Let our strategic partnership with Italy serve as a foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation and act as a catalyst for future development and sustainable growth." This is indeed an important conclusion.
