A snowstorm that hit the United States has caused significant transportation issues. Thousands of people who planned trips during the long weekend between Christmas and New Year’s found themselves stranded at airports, reports The Hill.

In New York, about 15 centimeters of snow fell, prompting local authorities and the state government of New Jersey to declare a state of emergency. Fortunately, by the evening, the storm began to weaken.

According to data from FlightAware, over 9,000 domestic flights were canceled or delayed nationwide by Saturday evening, particularly in the New York area.

On Friday, Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport issued warnings about potential flight schedule disruptions on the social network X.

In New Jersey and Pennsylvania, authorities have imposed restrictions on commercial vehicle traffic on several roads, including major interstate highways.

Forecasters report that the storm moved from the northwest to the southeast. On eastern Long Island, over 15 centimeters of snow was recorded in central areas, while in the Catskill Mountains, snowfall reached up to 25 centimeters in some places.

Despite the difficulties, some New Yorkers viewed the snowfall positively. "It's just magnificent," shared one local resident.

A couple who arrived in the city from West Virginia expressed that the snow was an unexpected Christmas gift in honor of their third wedding anniversary.
