Not far from Korivayrachin in Peru, a collision occurred between two tourist trains heading to the famous archaeological complex of Machu Picchu. As a result of the incident, one person, believed to be a railway worker, was killed, and about 30 other passengers sustained various injuries, CNN reports.

According to the company managing the railway services, one of the trains was coming from Machu Picchu, while the other was heading towards it. Following the accident, traffic on the route connecting Machu Picchu and the city of Cusco was temporarily suspended. The causes of the collision remain unknown.

At the scene, local media captured footage showing carriages with broken windows and damaged sides, stuck on a narrow railway surrounded by dense forests and cliffs.

Every year, Machu Picchu receives about 1.5 million tourists, most of whom reach the complex by train, traveling to the town of Aguas Calientes. This monument, built by the Incas in the 15th century, served as a sanctuary for rulers and is one of the main attractions in Peru. Over the past ten years, the number of visitors has increased by approximately 25%, although tourism in this region sometimes suffers from political protests and management issues, including blockades of railway lines.
