The president has not yet specified the timing of the operations
In an interview on the Hannity program on Fox News, Donald Trump announced that American troops are preparing to begin ground operations against drug cartels in Mexico.
According to Trump, the United States has nearly completely blocked maritime routes for drug shipments from Venezuela, and now attention will shift to land routes from Mexico, as noted by Meduza.
“We have cut off 97% of drug trafficking by sea, and now we are starting ground strikes aimed at the cartels. These groups effectively control Mexico. It is hard to watch, to see what is happening in this country. The cartels kill 250,000 to 300,000 people a year in the US,” Trump stated.
At the same time, the president did not specify either the timing or the scale of the upcoming attacks.
It is worth noting that this interview followed a recent US military operation in Venezuela, during which the country's president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were kidnapped. Washington accuses Maduro of drug trafficking and arms possession, while his wife is accused of smuggling and accepting bribes. Hearings against them are taking place in New York, and Maduro himself denies all charges.
Before the operation in Venezuela, the US armed forces attacked Venezuelan vessels suspected of drug trafficking. According to American officials, more than a hundred people have died as a result of these attacks since September.
After returning to the White House, Trump designated six Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, as reported by Euronews. This decision has drawn condemnation from Mexican authorities, who view it as a potential justification for military intervention.
Military actions on Mexican territory without the consent of Mexican authorities would violate international law and constitute an unprecedented act of aggression against a US ally and important trading partner, emphasizes Euronews. Recently, Trump stated that in making decisions, he is guided not by international law but by his moral principles.
