The Institute of Hydrometeorology, as well as Environmental Research and Information, has prepared a forecast for drought in January 2026. This forecast is based on data obtained from both ground observations and satellites. Information on drought, summer drought, winter-spring pasture capacity in 2025-2026, as well as data on air temperature, changes in precipitation from average values, and snow depth were taken into account.
According to the forecast, livestock wintering will be difficult in 3% of the territory, extremely difficult in 17%, moderate in 38%, slightly difficult in 26%, and not difficult in 16%. The most significant deterioration in wintering conditions is expected in most areas of the aimags of Bayan-Ölgii, Uvs, Khovd, Töv, and Selenge, as well as in certain areas of the aimags of Övörkhangai, Bayankhongor, and Dundgovi.
In this regard, it is important to pay close attention to those regions where livestock wintering may be challenging. It is recommended to regularly update response strategies based on short-term, medium-term, and long-term weather forecasts provided by meteorological services, as well as on updated drought forecasts.
