As of December 31, 74% of Mongolia was covered in snow, according to data obtained from the Hydrometeorological Institute. The highest amount of snow is observed in the soums of Khovd, Zavkhan, Tsetsen-Uul, and Khövsgöl, where the thickness reaches 30-40 cm. Over the past ten days, the snow cover level has decreased by 5%.
As for ice, its thickness varies from 5 to 50 cm, which is below the average figures for the same period in 2025, as well as for many previous years.
By January 1, most rivers and lakes in Mongolia were already covered with ice, and the thickness of the ice increased by 5-45 cm compared to the previous ten days, reaching 20-120 cm. However, the ice load has not yet reached the necessary level for safe movement of people and animals, so the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) strongly recommends avoiding movement on ice and using vehicles for the sake of saving time or shortening routes.
