The agency emphasized that even in stable freezing conditions, ice may not be strong enough and can pose a danger to life. Therefore, it is important to strictly adhere to the established rules.
Specialists report that ice only five centimeters thick cannot support the weight of an adult. At a thickness of 10 centimeters, only fishing is allowed, while moving on the ice is considered dangerous. For safe movement on a snowmobile, the ice must be at least 12 centimeters thick, for passenger cars – 20–30 centimeters, and for heavy vehicles – from 30 to 38 centimeters.
Cracks and cavities that are difficult to notice may be hidden under a layer of snow. Therefore, going out on the ice alone or testing its strength by striking it is highly discouraged.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations also informs that going out on the ice during snowfall, fog, or at night is prohibited, as the likelihood of accidents significantly increases in such situations.
