9 Mongolian aimags faced harsh winter weather

Extremely low winter temperatures are being observed in Mongolia, affecting more than nine aimags.

According to information provided by the General Authority for Emergency Situations of Mongolia (GAES), at least nine out of the 21 aimags in the country are facing severe winter conditions known as "dzud."

The term "dzud" in Mongolia describes extreme winter conditions when a large number of animals may die due to freezing or snow cover.

According to GAES statements, the affected aimags include Uvs, Khovd, and Zavkhan in the west, as well as Övörkhangai in the center of the country and Selenge in the north.

Additionally, 16 aimags are experiencing conditions similar to dzud, according to the agency.

Livestock farming is the backbone of Mongolia's economy and supports nearly 40% of the country's nomadic population.

However, harsh winter conditions lead to significant losses among nomadic herders every year.

According to the National Statistical Office (NSO), as of the end of 2025, Mongolia had 58.1 million head of livestock.
