The UN Security Council discussed the escalation of the situation in Lebanon

The organization warned of the likelihood of further escalation of the conflict

A recent meeting of the UN Security Council, held at the organization's headquarters, was dedicated to the deteriorating situation in Lebanon. Information about this was posted on the official UN website.

The urgent discussion was prompted by a new wave of violence arising amid the military operation by the US and Israel against Iran. The meeting was initiated by France with the support of other countries. This month, the presidency of the Security Council is held by the United States.

Speaking at the meeting, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo emphasized that the escalation of the conflict would not lead to positive outcomes for the parties involved. She called for an end to the violence in order to prevent further casualties and to create conditions for constructive dialogue.

DiCarlo noted that Lebanon has once again become embroiled in conflict due to Hezbollah's decision to attack Israel on March 2. She pointed to the violation of Security Council Resolution 1701, which resulted in Hezbollah militants shelling Israeli territory and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

In response, Israel launched extensive airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, southern regions of Lebanon, as well as the Bekaa Valley and Baalbek. According to information from the Lebanese government, more than 570 people have died as a result of these actions, and over 1,400 have been injured.

Israel also announced the need for evacuations from several areas, leading to mass displacement of residents. According to UN data at the beginning of March, about 700,000 people have left their homes to escape the hostilities.
