In the Iranian city of Qom, the execution of three men convicted of killing two police officers during protests that took place earlier this year has been carried out, Reuters reports, citing Iranian state television.

All three were sentenced for "moharebeh," which means "enmity against God," as well as for actions aimed at supporting Israel and the United States. According to authorities, on January 8, they participated in armed attacks on police officers, resulting in the deaths of two law enforcement personnel.

On March 18, Sweden's Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard reported the execution of a Swedish citizen in Iran. The man was detained in June 2025, and Swedish authorities had repeatedly attempted to secure his release.

Anti-government protests in Iran began on December 28, 2025, against the backdrop of a worsening economic situation, including a sharp decline in the national currency and rising prices. These riots spread to dozens of cities. According to the Iran International television channel, more than 36,500 people died during the protests from January 8 to 9. The independent human rights organization HRANA, based in the U.S., confirmed the deaths of at least 7,000 civilians during the January unrest. The Attorney General of Iran stated on January 21 that the protests had been completely suppressed.
