According to information provided by The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, one of the missiles failed in flight, while another was intercepted by an SM-3 missile launched from an American ship. At the same time, it has not been definitively established whether a successful interception occurred.

This event marks the first instance of Iran's combat use of medium-range missiles and a serious attempt by Tehran to demonstrate a threat to American interests outside the Middle East. Diego Garcia is located about 4,000 kilometers from Iran, and according to estimates from the WSJ, this incident may indicate that Iran possesses missiles with a greater range than previously claimed.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed the opinion that Tehran deliberately limited the range of its missiles to 2,000 kilometers in order not to be perceived as a more serious threat.

Against this backdrop, on March 20, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington is close to achieving its goals in the conflict with Iran and that there is a possibility of scaling back large military operations in the Middle East. According to information from Reuters, the conflict has been ongoing since February 28, and in recent days, Iran has attacked not only facilities in the Persian Gulf but also the base at Diego Garcia.
