The IAEA press release notes that "the mission confirmed the loss of fundamental safety functions of the sarcophagus, including its ability to contain threats," while no significant damage to load-bearing structures or monitoring systems was identified.

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive restoration of the sarcophagus to prevent further deterioration and ensure sustainable nuclear safety.

It should be noted that Ukraine and Russia had previously exchanged accusations regarding the strike on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
