According to information provided by the IAEA, the sarcophagus has lost its ability to contain the release of radioactive substances. However, experts note that no serious damage to the supporting structures or monitoring systems has been found.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized that only limited temporary repairs have been made to the roof of the sarcophagus, but a full restoration is necessary to prevent further deterioration and ensure long-term nuclear safety.

In 2026, temporary repair work on the sarcophagus is planned with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which will be the first step towards the complete restoration of the protective structure after the end of the conflict.
