Ferry with 350 Passengers Sinks Off the Coast of the Philippines, 15 Confirmed Dead

The cargo-passenger vessel M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, which was heading from Zamboanga to Holo Island, sank off the coast of the Philippines. Initial reports indicate that the cause of the tragedy was technical malfunctions. This was reported by Interfax.

The ferry, which had more than 350 people on board, capsized on the night from Sunday to Monday near the southern island. According to authorities, at least 316 passengers were rescued, but 15 people have been declared dead. More than 100 people are still considered missing.

Coast Guard Commander Romel Dua stated that the final causes of the incident have not yet been determined and an investigation will begin shortly.

He also added that before the ferry departed from Zamboanga, the coast guard inspected it, and no signs of overloading were found.
