The summer verdict of last year accused former bodyguard of Almazbek Atambayev of laundering criminal proceeds
The Issyk-Kul Regional Court upheld the first-instance verdict against Erkin Mambetaliev, who previously worked as a bodyguard for former president Almazbek Atambayev. This decision was made after an appellate review of the case.
Last year, Mambetaliev was found guilty of laundering large criminal proceeds, participating in an organized criminal group, and other offenses. The court sentenced him to 9 years in prison with confiscation of property and restrictions on holding certain positions for three years.
It should be noted that Erkin Mambetaliev's name has appeared in a number of high-profile criminal cases and has raised questions about his possible connections with criminal authorities such as Ryspek Akmatbaev and Kamchi Kolbaev.
In 2008, the Supreme Court sentenced him to life imprisonment for his involvement in murders, including that of police colonel Chynybek Aliyev and deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Jyrgalbek Surabaldiyev. However, following the events of April 2010, Mambetaliev's case was reviewed, and he was released.
