The Uprising of the Kyrgyz in 1916: A Perspective Through a Century...
Recently, the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences at the M. Ryskulbekov Kyrgyz Economic University, in collaboration with the Youth Affairs Committee, held a round table on the most tragic topic in the history of the Kyrgyz people in the 20th century. The theme of the uprising of Central Asian peoples in general, and the Kyrgyz in particular, against the colonial oppression of Tsarism in 1916 has not yet been thoroughly researched. Despite the existing archival materials and eyewitness accounts that vividly speak of all the horrors of this bloody page in the history of the Kyrgyz, historians discuss the topic of the uprising very briefly and cautiously for various objective reasons related to contemporary realities. Students from KEU and I. Razakov KTU presented rather "sharp" reports at the round table at KEU on the topic of the 1916 uprising, particularly regarding its causes and consequences. Some facts from these presentations about the suffering fate of the rebellious Kyrgyz people brought tears to the eyes of the participants at the round table and tugged at their hearts. Indeed, this information is not for the faint-hearted. Nevertheless, this is our history; it is what we were destined to go through on the path to the revival of Kyrgyz statehood. Summarizing the reports and opinions of the participants of the round table, the faculty of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences at KEU emphasized to the listeners that they raised this issue for discussion among progressive youth not to exacerbate interethnic or interstate relations or to provide a pretext for revenge and demands for compensation for the affected side, but exclusively for the purpose of informing the younger generation about their history, so that they know, remember, and honor the memory of their ancestors, and so that a tragedy like that of 1916 does not happen again to the Kyrgyz people or any other people in the world.
