The Role of the Snow Leopard in Biodiversity Conservation Discussed in Osh

The event, organized by the southern branch of the German nature conservation organization NABU in the Kyrgyz Republic, took place at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Geography of Osh State Pedagogical University. It was attended by students, local residents, and representatives of environmental organizations interested in nature conservation issues.

Participants discussed the importance of preserving the snow leopard, its natural habitat, and the role of international and public organizations in environmental protection. Current data on the status of snow leopards in Kyrgyzstan and the efforts being made for their conservation were presented.

Additionally, during the event, a lively discussion took place where participants exchanged views on ways to preserve the snow leopard population and put forward their suggestions. At the end of the meeting, all attendees received informational materials prepared by NABU Kyrgyzstan.

The snow leopard was declared a **national symbol of Kyrgyzstan** at the end of 2023 when President Sadyr Japarov signed the relevant decree.

This rare animal is listed in the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan and is protected by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In 12 countries around the world, the snow leopard is classified as an endangered species.
