Irena Lesnevskaya passed away at the age of 83. As Marianna Maksimovskaya announced on her Facebook page, “Irena Stefanovna Lesnevskaya has left us. This name is associated with the REN channel that she founded. My colleagues and I from ‘Nedelya’ owe her a lot. She did a great deal for all of Russian television.”
Irena was born on May 30, 1942, in the village of Urlyutyup, located in the Pavlodar region, now Kazakhstan. In 1945, she moved to Moscow with her mother and brother. In the 1960s, she graduated from the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, choosing a specialization in television journalism.
In 1991, together with her son Dmitry, Lesnevskaya founded the television company Ren TV. In 1997, they launched the eponymous channel, which they managed until 2005. After leaving Ren TV, Irena acquired the magazine “Novoe Vremya,” which later became known as The New Times. She was not only the publisher but also served as the editor-in-chief for two years. In 2013, Lesnevskaya handed over the magazine to Yevgenia Albats.
In 2010, Irena Lesnevskaya was awarded the French Order of the Legion of Honor.
