The Works of Professor Polivanov

Despite the heavy pressure, both E. Polivanov and K. Tynystanov are working actively. In the thematic plan of the scientific research works of the Institute for 1936 (otherwise known as the themes on which research was conducted), the following works were listed:
— “Outline of the Syntax of the Kyrgyz Language.” — Tynystanov, 1 printed sheet, Kyrgyz language;
— “Punctuation of the Kyrgyz Language.” — Tynystanov, 1 printed sheet, Kyrgyz language;
— “Materials on the Grammar of the Dungan Language.” — Polivanov, 15 sheets, Russian language;
— “Materials from the Dungan Expedition of 1936.” — Polivanov and Yan-Shan-Sin, Russian-Dungan;
— “Punctuation of the Dungan Language.” — Polivanov and Yan-Shan-Sin, 1 printed sheet, Dungan language.

Judging by the plan, the work of the linguists was extremely intensive. If they had not been hindered, it should have also been productive.

He had big plans for the fateful year of 1937 — the creation of the following works:
1. “Osh Dialect,” Kyrgyz language (Russian language), 2 printed sheets.
2. “Outline of Dungan Dialectology” (results of the 1936 expedition), 5 printed sheets (Russian, Dungan). Co-authored with Yan-Shan-Sin. Dungan language (co-authored with Yan-Shan-Sin).
3. Expedition to Osh for 1 month starting July 1.
4. Expedition to the Chuy Valley and Karakol for half a month starting May 1. — Polivanov, Yan-Shan-Sin.

According to the publishing plan for 1937, Polivanov was to publish his completed manuscripts;
1. “Scientific Description of the Dungan Language.” Russian language, 12 printed sheets.
2. “Outline of the History of Dungan Writing.” Russian language, 2 printed sheets.
3. “Dungan Dialectology.” Russian, Dungan, 5 printed sheets. (Co-authored with Yan-Shan-Sin).

None of the above-mentioned works were published, and the overwhelming majority of the manuscripts of the two scholarly colleagues did not reach us.

The direction of the institute (new director A. Valitov) characterized E. D. Polivanov as a fruitful scholar, who, according to his “methodological approaches” in the field of linguistics, was a representative of the so-called “Indo-European school.” His manuscript on the scientific description of the literary Dungan language was sent by the institute for review to the well-known specialist — sinologist Academician Alekseev in Leningrad. However, they immediately distanced themselves from his other fundamental work “Introduction to Phonetics,” which was with the publishing house of the Society of Foreign Workers in the USSR. The issue was that the publishing house inquired with the institute where the scholar was currently working about the feasibility of “popularizing and publishing” his works due to the fact that they were “aware of some negative aspects of Professor Polivanov's works during his time in Moscow and Leningrad.”

It was already 1937. None of the above-mentioned works of Polivanov were published. The noted works of K. Tynystanov also did not see the light. Our lengthy list of the manuscript heritage of the scholars, which has not found its reader, is prompted by the desire to draw attention to them and call for their search, as they are a national treasure of the entire Soviet people.
