Tajikistan increased electricity exports by a third in 2025

In 2025, Tajikistan significantly increased its electricity export volume, raising it by 37.3% compared to the previous year. According to the relevant ministry, the total volume of supplies abroad amounted to 5.356 billion kWh. The key partners that provided the main foreign currency earnings were Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, which allowed the republic to earn $97.3 million (913 million somoni).

The largest portion of the exported electricity was directed to Afghanistan, which purchased 1.8 billion kWh, equivalent to over $79 million. Uzbekistan bought nearly 900 million kWh, while the volume supplied to Kyrgyzstan was much smaller — only 12 million kWh. It should be noted that most of the supplies occurred during the spring-summer period when the water level in Tajikistan's rivers reached its peak.

Additionally, in 2025, the republic actively worked on eliminating the electricity deficit during the winter period. Electricity imports increased by 67%, totaling 2.7 billion kWh, with almost all of the purchased energy coming from Uzbekistan, which helped meet the needs of the population and industrial enterprises.

The domestic electricity generation in the country approached the mark of 24 billion kWh, representing a growth of 6.5%. There is also a positive trend in reducing technological losses in the power grids, which have been reduced to 15% (about 4 billion kWh), indicating the modernization process of Tajikistan's energy infrastructure.
