The authorities of Iran have begun charging a fee for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, organizing a special safe route for tankers that have received the appropriate permission. According to the British shipping magazine Lloyd’s List, this step was prompted by the need to control the passage of vessels in this strategically important waterway.

According to the publication, at least nine tankers have already used the new corridor, which passes near the Iranian island of Larak and is under the surveillance of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. At least one of the tanker operators paid about $2 million for permission to pass through the Gulf.

In the coming days, the IRGC is expected to develop a clearer and more formalized procedure for issuing such permissions.

The CEO of the maritime security company Marisks, Dimitris Maniatis, noted that work is currently underway to create a procedure that will allow vessels with no ties to Israel or the United States to obtain confirmation for safe passage through the strait.

At the moment, each application is considered individually.

Many countries, including India, Pakistan, Iraq, Malaysia, and China, are already discussing the possibility of direct transit of vessels with Tehran, as reported by Lloyd’s List.
